Formulation
'mild by design' is a phrase we use to describe how we approach fragrance in moosh products. it's not a limitation or a compromise. it's a deliberate choice with specific reasoning behind it.
in the personal care industry, fragrance is often the primary differentiator between products. brands invest heavily in scent development because it's the most immediate, most emotional part of the product experience. a customer smelling a product in a store or in their shower for the first time — forms an opinion about quality within seconds, and that opinion is driven largely by scent.
this creates an incentive to make products smell as strong and as memorable as possible. the stronger the scent, the more immediate the impression. the more memorable the fragrance, the more likely the customer is to associate it with the brand. from a marketing perspective, strong scent is an advantage.
from a skin and scalp perspective, it's often a problem.
the 'fragrance' or 'parfum' line in an ingredient list is a single entry that can contain anywhere from a dozen to over fifty individual aroma chemicals. these compounds are protected as trade secrets, so brands aren't required to disclose the specific chemicals used in their fragrance blends. some of these compounds are well-studied and safe. others are known sensitisers that can trigger irritation, dryness, redness, and allergic reactions — especially on sensitive or reactive skin.
the stronger the scent, the higher the total concentration of these fragrance compounds. a strongly-scented shampoo might have fragrance at 1-2% of the total formula. a mildly-scented one might have it at 0.2-0.5%. the difference in irritation potential is proportional.
this is the first reason our scents are mild: lower concentration means lower risk of irritation. for our founder, whose autoimmune condition makes their skin exceptionally reactive, this isn't theoretical. it's the difference between a product they can use and one they can't.
the second reason is functional. shampoo and body wash are wash-off products. you apply them for two to five minutes, then rinse them away. they are not perfume. they are not designed to scent you for the rest of the day. a fragrance that fills a room from ten feet away is dramatically over-engineered for a product that exists on your body for a few minutes.
we designed our scents for the window of use: the moment you open the cap, the time the product is in your hands and on your body, and the brief period after rinsing. the scent should be present during this window — present enough to make the shower feel considered, to distinguish between the three products, to create a small sensory moment. and then it should fade. by the time you're dressed, the scent is essentially gone.
this means our products don't compete with your perfume, your cologne, your deodorant, or your partner's products. they don't announce themselves when you enter a room. they exist for the private, three-minute ritual of your shower and then they step aside.
the third reason is aesthetic. there's a quality of restraint in mild scent that's hard to articulate but easy to recognise. a strongly-scented product is trying to impress you. a mildly-scented product trusts that the formulation, the texture, and the result will do the impressing. the scent is there to enhance the experience, not to carry it.
we think of it like background music in a good restaurant. it shapes the atmosphere without dominating the conversation. you notice it when it's right. you notice when it's missing. but it never demands your attention. that's what our scents are designed to do.
each product's scent uses a simplified version of perfumery's top-heart-base architecture. the top note is the first impression when you open the bottle. the heart note is what you notice during lathering and use. the base note is the subtle warmth that lingers briefly after rinsing. in a perfume, these layers unfold over hours. in our products, they unfold over minutes. the structure is the same but the intensity is scaled to the moment.
argan shampoo: coconut (top, warm) → almond (heart, soft) → cedar (base, grounding). clay shampoo: grapefruit (top, bright) → rosemary (heart, herbal) → vetiver (base, earthy). botanical shower gel: cucumber (top, crisp) → papaya (heart, sweet) → vanilla (base, calm).
three scents. each designed for a different product and a different moment. all mild. all intentional. present enough to notice. light enough to forget.
that's what mild by design means. not less effort. more thought.
